How well do I do it?

Software reviews

I've done lots of these, at word-counts ranging from 300 to 6,000. One-offs, comparatives, round-ups, flowing copy, product-per-column - if it exists as a format for writing about software products, I've probably written in it.

As well as captioned screen shots, I'm used to supplying themed multi-pic walk-throughs showing how product features work. I've also done ScreenCam movies demonstrating products in action.

I started off in 1987 reviewing the likes of DesQView and GEM XM, and this year (1999) have covered, among others, Microsoft Office 2000, Netscape Navigator 4.61 and Allaire's HomeSite 4.0 web authoring package. See below for more products I've reviewed.

My special areas of interest (see right-hand column for more details) are databases, Windows (9.x and 2000), Office suites and anything to do with Web development. I've also covered CD-ROM based multimedia packages (Encarta etc), online services (AOL vs CompuServe in the old days), and developer tools packages. I've reviewed every release of Windows since 2.0 for PC Plus, as well as every release of Microsoft Office and Lotus SmartSuite.

My two main objectives when writing a review are to make sure the reader knows what the product actually is (something which marketing material often obscures) and to give a thorough, balanced and honest view. A large part of the reputation I've built over the past 12 years has been based on doing just that.

Conclusion to PC Plus's Windows 98 review, August 1998. The feature was 16 pages long; I wrote 14 and commissioned/edited the rest. Here's the bottom line.
