How well do I do it?

OK, so I can do all those things in the left-hand margin, but what's special about the way I do them?

Here are the key features of my work:

  • Always clean copy, to length and in style. Check the copy samples on these pages. With the exception of the two news pieces, they're the actual text I sent to the magazine, with no further editing. I can honestly say that I have never submitted a sub-standard piece of work.

  • Material that people can understand. Check the reader feedback quotes in the Tutorials and ScreenCam sections - they like what I write because I go the extra mile to make things comprehensible. This applies equally whether it's a review or a tutorial, aimed at beginners or professional developers.

  • Technical accuracy. Before turning to journalism I worked in the mainframe business, where small mistakes can have massive consequences. I've maintained the standards of technical accuracy I learned then in my work as a PC journalist, so if you see something stated as a fact by me, it means I've checked it and I'm clear about what it means.

  • Insight and humour. Whether it's a review or a how-to, I look into the subject properly, bring out the key points and deliver informed opinions which people trust (I've been doing it for 12 years, and have a pretty good success rate). I think there's room for humour in even the most serious piece, and that it can be a great way to get a point across - but you have to be extremely careful about getting it right. Again, my track record shows that I've consistently managed it.

Yes, but what about deadlines?

Like every writer I've encountered deadline problems (and also taken on some eye-watering ones, and met them). However my policy now is not to say I'll do something unless I'm absolutely certain I can deliver it on time. That means I might sometimes turn down a commission - please bear with me, as I'm just trying to play it straight!
