What do I know? - The Ropes!Knowing your way around the industry is essential in this job, and in 12 years I reckon I've acquired the Knowledge. Most of the major PR companies know me (in particular Text 100 / AugustOne), and have me on their mailing lists. Although I'm not London-based, I've attended more press conferences and one-on-ones than I can remember, and know when to ask that key question in open forum, and when to leave it for a quiet moment later. Press trips might seem like beanfeasts (my daughter certainly thinks so), but it's important to come away with the goods. I've visited Seattle around ten times now (I've honestly lost count!), and know how the Microsoft presentational machine works. I've also been to, among others, IBM in Florida, Borland in California, HP in Stuttgart and a USP vendor in Grenoble (which was, I'll have to confess, pretty hard to make a good story of afterwards). I've attended Comdex in Las Vegas, CeBIT in Hanover, and more shows at Earls Court and Olympia than I really want to remember. In short, if you want someone who knows who to talk to, where to look and how to read between the lines, then that's me. © Paul Stephens 1999. All rights reserved.
