What can I do? |
Planning, commissioning and editingI was Editor of PC Plus for 52 issues, between December 1988 and April 1993. During that time its ABC rose from 31,911 to 105,136, and its pagination from 148 to 436, making it officially 'Britain's biggest and best-selling PC magazine'. On that basis I was probably getting at least some things right some of the time!
As well as my two-month stint as fill-in news editor on PC Plus, I've planned, commissioned and edited a number of supplements and 'mega-features' for the magazine, including its annual Product Awards section, a 32-page office suite supplement and PC Plus's 32-page Windows 95 review. Copy editing (subbing plus technical verification) is a speciality of mine - whatever it's like to begin with, I can get it to length, in good English to house style, and technically accurate. As well as PC Plus, I've also edited features for Developer Network Journal magazine, including some from technical experts whose first language is not English, and whose first career is not journalism. I enjoy producing new feature ideas; during my time as Editor on PC Plus, I introduced a Buyers Guide, Brief Encounters (short reviews), hardware and software group tests, columns, news analysis and a 'combo feature' structure which combined news and comment with short product reviews. Most of these are still running (some under different names) in the magazine today. Many of the features I've written for PC Plus since 1993 have been self-commissioned (especially the big ones). Two very popular regulars, Group Efforts and Web Workshop (originally Publish and Be...) were my own ideas. I can offer the following services on a freelance basis:
